Rain gardens are garden spaces designed to capture storm water runoff from roofs, driveways and other impervious surfaces. Rain gardens filter captured stormwater through the soil and plants, allowing it to soak into the ground. Properly designed and maintained, rain gardens will help reduce strain on the municipal storm sewers and reduce the risk of flooding.
Not only do rain gardens provide a functional service, they can also create beautiful spaces for people to enjoy, and provide habitat for pollinators and urban wildlife. Rain gardens are often planted with water-loving native plants that are well adapted to our West Coast climate and can absorb large quantities of water but also survive short periods of drought.
At the new Tsawwassen Mills shopping centre currently nearing construction completion, Stantec Architecture specified Rain Gardens.
Denbow installed Terraseeded™ EcoBlanket® with a special Raingarden Seed Mix.
Installed in July and watered well during the dry weather, these Rain Gardens are flourishing, and ready to do their job during the expected fall rains.
